If you are someone who avoids the dentist like the plague, sedation dentistry may be for you. Does your whole body tense with fear at the thought of getting your teeth cleaned? Would you rather deal with a toothache than take one step into your dentist’s office? These fears are more common than you think. You are not alone. A lot of people have a real anxiety about going to the dentist to have any kind of treatment.
Sedation dentistry can be used to help patients relax during any procedure, from a simple tooth cleaning to an invasive procedure. At Allen Always Smiles we take care of our nervous patients using nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, at room temperature, is a colorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. It is commonly known as “laughing gas”. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.
Who can have sedation at the dentist’s?
Nitrous oxide is appropriate for people who have a real fear or anxiety that may prevent them from going to the dentist.
Nitrous oxide is also appropriate for people who:
- have a low pain threshold
- have sensitive teeth
- can’t sit still in the dentist chair
- need a large amount of dental work done
- have very sensitive teeth
We hope to make our patients as comfortable as possible no matter what treatment they are having. Nitrous oxide can help make your experience at the dentist more relaxing and just plain easier. Let us know if you would like to use nitrous oxide at your next appointment.
